Robert Mamani — Musician and Teacher from Peru

Musical healer. The voice of the ancient Andes in today's world.

“My mission is to heal with music.”

The boy with the panpipe

I speak to you personally, because I believe it is the best way to reach each of you. I'm going to tell you a little about my story.

I was born and raised in Peru, in a world where folk music sounded everywhere. In my childhood I was surrounded by the sounds of the zampoña, the quena, the charango and the bombo: traditional instruments of the Andes. At the age of 8, my father gave me my first panpipe, and I began to master this ancestral instrument with which my ancestors played for millennia.

In my youth I practiced national dances and listened to professional ethnic ensembles that inspired me. Soon they invited me to a musical group: first as a percussionist and then playing both the bass drum and the panpipe. In parallel, I learned the charango, the national string instrument of Alto Perú — the land shared by Bolivia and Peru.

Like 60–70% of South American folk musicians, I am self-taught. I learned by ear, developing musical instinct through attentive listening. No sheet music. No academies. Just hearing, patience and love for music.

From the street to the world stage

My talent was noticed. One day, almost by chance, I arrived at a casting and they invited me to a professional ethnic group. I signed a contract and went on tour to Germany. It was a turning point in my life: working with high-level musicians opened horizons and new ways of interacting for me.

The path took me to Russia, where I found a sensitive and grateful audience. Today I live and perform in Moscow. My concerts take place in very diverse settings: from tea clubs and libraries to festivals and corporate events. I participate in the “Music in the Metro” project, playing in Moscow metro stations, and every month I give charity concerts for veterans.

An article from "Vechernyaya Moskva" appeared on the front page with the headline "What town are you from?": the man-orchestra with Andean instruments became one of the most unique participants in the capital's project "Music in the subway."

Music unites hearts

For me, music is not entertainment, but service. I am convinced that each person comes into this world with a mission, and mine is to help people through music, words and presence.

“When I play, I give myself completely to the music. I offer the vibrations that are born in my heart and my spirit. Listeners connect and join in. All people gather in a single circle, in a single world. And in that circle a flow of energy arises that makes us one."

I don't see myself just as a musician, but as an instrument in the hands of a higher force. Like a flute blown into: it sings and comes to life. Thus, through me comes what people need at all times: music, words or silence.

I believe in the strength of each person and in the direct connection of each of us with higher forces — be it God, energy or the cosmos. The task of the spiritual teacher is to help people find that path, ease the burden and lighten the spirit.
